Up to where can obsession lead you? Meek Eva grows a mysterious horsetail as she struggles to create foley sounds for a commercial featuring a horse. Her new tail brings liberation as she finds herself on a journey of self-discovery and experimentation.
Piaffe’s sparse dialogue allows for its visceral 16mm images to do the talking. A feeling of tactile intimacy transpires through the texture and grain of the film strip, reinforcing a caring, attentive gaze that is cast upon humans, animals and plants alike. Delicacy, fragility and arousal are blended together in a lushly colored exploration of otherness, with Eva’s mysterious horsetail also making room for a touch of light-hearted whimsicalness. Not completely innocent, but far from perverse, Ann Oren’s film is a playful and sensitive tale of self and sexual discovery, where the cerebral and the meta-cinematic meet a soft, gentle eroticism.
