Abdi is a carpenter who settled in the Netherlands after spending his childhood in Mogadishu, in the midst of Somalia’s civil war. Together with his neighbour Douwe, he reconstructs his life using a diorama, a green screen and his memories.
Drawing on the memories of his neighbour Abdi and working side by side with him, Dijkstra paints a portrait of his childhood during the worst years of the Somali civil war, followed by his troubled youth. But what distinguishes Buurman Abdi from the majority of films regarding migration is not just its collaborative nature, in which the subject is empowered to work directly on his own depiction (Abdi directs scenes and builds the film’s set), but also the ease, even playfulness with which it jumps from the fictional to the documentary – sometimes within seconds.
